Dear VSquare Reader,

The recent overnight freeze of U.S. foreign aid and the shutting down of anti-disinformation initiatives have had serious consequences for Central Europe.

By withdrawing support for independent journalism and civil society efforts, these actions have created more space for Russia and China’s ever-growing malign influence in our region. Once again, Central Europe is left alone to face increasing authoritarian tendencies at home and the very real security threat posed by Russia and its hybrid operations.

At VSquare, we believe that the best way to respond to these threats is through fearless, fact-based investigative journalism—work that exposes corruption, foreign malign influence, and risks to our democratic societies.

While Russia is investing $1.5 billion in its influence operations, quality investigative journalism, which is central to revealing and countering disinformation, is struggling to survive.

At the core of VSquare’s philosophy is cooperation. We are a unique, collaborative newsroom that provides cross-border, in-depth coverage of critical topics from Central Eastern Europe—ensuring that vital stories from the region reach policymakers, researchers and journalists worldwide.

VSquare brings together leading non-profit investigative journalists, with core partners in the Czech Republic, Hungary, Poland, and Slovakia. We also closely cooperate with investigative centers in the Baltic states and other European countries.

Despite limited resources, we are punching above our weight. Over the past year, our dedicated team has grown and become more international than ever, with Anna Gielewska from Poland serving as our editor-in-chief, Emily Tamkin from the U.S. as our language editor, Szabolcs Panyi from Hungary leading investigations and writing our popular Goulash newsletter, Anastasiia Morozova, originally from Ukraine, heading the data and research team, and our newest addition, Tamara Kaňuchová from Slovakia, working for VSquare as both a journalist and social media manager.

With your support, we can continue our work and strengthen independent journalism in the region. Your donation enables us to keep uncovering critical stories, and revealing disinformation in Central Europe.
